Yes definitely from an ingredient household! And yes that is exactly how I shop for clothing! It probably explains why it is so difficult to style a dress or jumpsuit - it can only be a dress or jumpsuit. However for days when the brain fog is real, it is so easy to just not think about creating an outfit, but rather having the outfit all ready to go. One and done!
Great connection, Stella. Yes, my pantry and fridge are definitely Ingredient focused, as is my wardrobe. I do have dresses, mainly slip dresses of various styles and many colours with lots of neutrals, so wear them topped with various items and styled differently. But mainly wear separates. Would say I am more at the Creative end of the CP scale? Though outfit has to also be practical. Rarely shop for whole outfit and mix new pieces with some very old WOFs and ‘interest’ pieces.
Ingredient Households were much more common than Hot Pocket ones when I was growing up in Australia. I’m also quite a bit older so Hot Pockets were less available then. It’s no surprise that I’m mostly an Ingredient outfit shopper, except if I’m looking to buy something for a special occasion, like a wedding. But even that has changed now that the world is much less formal than it used to be. At the last wedding I attended I put together an outfit of separates from my wardrobe and was happy to do so. I also subscribe to the notion that you should buy clothes that you love when you stumble across them even if you’re not looking purposefully. I guess to extend your analogy, buying a great ingredient when you find it beats having to run out for a Hot Pocket when the need arises!
Are you telling me that not everyone combines leftover rice from Chinese takeout with a squeeze of Hershey's chocolate sauce from a bottle? This famous concoction by my father in my 70s childhood is legendary. My personal favorite is hotdogs with mustard and potato chips. "Outfits" bore me, and I am generally known around town to never be in the same outfit twice. lol
When I was growing up, I learned that "appetizers" was a slice of bologna and a slice of american cheese. This was rolled up, and several were put in the microwave. They were best when really frizzled and the cheese would ooze out the sides and burn (but not too much). I didn't realize that appetizers were a *category* of food (not a single item) until well into my 20s.
I grew up in a Hot Pocket household. My mother hated cooking, and as a child of the Great Depression with all the traditional gender roles, I think she viewed easy meals as a bit of a life saver. We ate a lot of fast food.
I'm not sure I'm 100% sold on the connection to clothing, but it's true that I do gravitate towards outfits as the "easy way out." I'm getting better at using my clothing items in multiple ways, but it's a process, and more often than not I'm just copying someone else's outfit.
And fwiw, I can follow a recipe, but I will never ever toss things together for a meal. 😜
100%! I love assembling a meal from disparate ingredients in my fridge and pantry. And the overall quality is so much better - both in terms of health and taste- than processed food. Like my pantry, my closet is made up of a variety of items that can be combined to make a whole that is more complex and interesting than its separate parts alone. A well stocked pantry (closet) will never let you down- you can always create something good with just a little effort.
Yes love this , never thought about it before but Im definitely an ingrediant eater, I love to add little delights on the side of my plate figs, dark chocolate, pickles, even random herbs to add some different textures and tastes- it also looks far more interesting to the eye. And yes my wardrobe is the same, quite ecletic but would hate to wear the same 'hot pocket' uniform each day--- boring! Thanks for the read Stella, got my mind thinking...!
This makes so much sense to me HOWEVER I can’t think of where my husband fits in. He grew up in an Ingredient household but has Hot Pocket tendencies and will not only wear his Outfits to death and struggle to find something to wear when his Outfits are in the laundry basket but he will also exist on nothing but bowls of cornflakes when I’m away.
Ooh, yes - also from an ingredient household in childhood, which I've carried over into my own adulthood. ("Surprising rice" being a particular family favourite.) I've also always generally been a separates vs dresses/one-pieces person so do wonder if they are related. 🤔

Hot pocket house but ingredient shopper when it comes to my closet!
