Also the use of color, the browns and the greys. I can’t believe what the actors were able to communicate with their eyes

I totally agree- I’m German, and The Lives of Others carries such a particular emotional weight because the history it depicts still feels culturally close, even for those of us who didn’t experience it firsthand. Your observation about the actors conveying that “light” appearing and disappearing is such a powerful way of describing what makes the film unforgettable.
